CONSTRUCTION of the new $2.6 million Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club began on Monday after the club raised the final $500,000 needed for the first stage.

Reaching this first key fundraising goal, which includes a $1.5 million contribution from the state government, has been a seven-year crusade for the Seaspray community after violent storms in 2007 caused significant structural damage to the existing clubhouse and put it in danger of toppling into the ocean.

The new first-class facility will be located directly behind the existing club and will be home to its burgeoning Nipper program.

It will have better operational control facilities, a first-aid centre, on-site equipment storage and a members' social function area which will feature views of the 90 Mile Beach and Merriman's Creek.

Seaspray SLSC president James Brown said it was a huge achievement for the club to raise $2.6 million.

He said it could not have happened without support from state and local governments, local businesses, community groups and club members.

"It's just been so fantastic that the community has backed us so well," Mr Brown said.

"It gives us the confidence that we are on the right track and that this will be a facility that everyone will support."

The second stage of the redevelopment will include a patrol tower and the third and final stage a more extensive decked area as part of the function facilities as well as more storage.

Established in 1955, the Seaspray SLSC was one of the last clubhouses to be built on coastal dunes.

The original wooden clubhouse was replaced with the current structure in 1973.
