SALE City and Woodside will hoist the North Gippsland senior football and A grade netball premiership flags on the opening day of the 2017 season.
Both clubs will launch the defence of their titles against the teams they overcame in last season’s grand finals, when the Bulldogs and Wildcats host Heyfield and Rosedale respectively.
The season will begin Saturday, April 1, with Yarram taking on Traralgon-Tyers United, Glengarry facing Churchill and Gormandale lining up against Cowwarr at Traralgon in the remaining round one match-ups.
Other highlights of the fixture include the traditional Easter weekend clash between Yarram and Woodside, and night matches between Churchill and Sale City in round two and Sale City and Yarram in round four.
A league-wide bye has been scheduled for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and a split round 14 in mid-July.
The finals series begins on the weekend of August 26 and 27 and concludes with grand final day, Saturday, September 16.
League president David Kyle said all early indications pointed to an exciting season, on and off the ground.
“We are fortunate to have a competition which delivers many close games and we regularly see game day results which surprise our seasoned patrons,” he said.
“At our recent annual general meeting, all clubs reported strong recruiting prospects across both our football and netball codes so we look set for another exciting year.
“Several clubs have also advised of facility upgrades that are at various stages of completion and I know our member clubs and their hardworking volunteers will be proud to unveil these improvements to all and sundry at the start of the season.”
EG fixture released
LINDENOW will begin the defence of its East Gippsland football premiership on home soil when it takes on Lakes Entrance in round one of the 2017 season.
The EGFNL season fixture was released this week, with the reigning premier set to host the Seagulls on Saturday, April 1, ahead of a grand final rematch against Paynesville in round two.
The Cats then celebrate their 800th match with a home game against Wy Yung in round three to conclude a festive first month of the season for the club.
Boisdale-Briagolong will host Stratford in round one.
A grade netball premier Wy Yung will also raise its premiership flag on the opening day of the new campaign, with a home game against Lucknow, while the grand final rematch against Stratford will not take place until round seven.
Other highlights of the fixture include an Anzac Day tribute match between Lucknow and Paynesville on Saturday, April 29, and Orbost-Snowy Rovers’ 250th game as a club on Saturday, June 17.
The three-week finals series opens on Saturday, August 26, with the grand final taking place on Saturday, September 9.
League-wide byes are scheduled for the Easter and Queen’s Birthday weekends.
