Not guilty plea on hit-run

THE accused in an alleged hit-and-run last year pleaded not guilty at a contested committal hearing at the Sale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

John Allen Reid, who has been charged with negligent driving causing harm and failing to stop, render assistance or inform police, will attend a directions hearing at the Sale County Court in March.

Mr Reid was accused of injuring two cyclists while driving on Gibsons Rd, Sale on March 23, 2016, and allegedly slowing down but failing to stop to assist.

A car was found abandoned in Sale and Mr Reid led police on a two week manhunt before being apprehended in Ceduna, South Australia, and extradited to Melbourne.

One of the cyclists suffered serious neck injuries, and wore a neck brace for six weeks due to a disc bulge, according to one witness.

Witnesses at the committal hearing said the morning of March 23 was foggy, with reduced visibility.
