MAFFRA Bowls Club is celebrating two pennant wins in the North Gippsland Bowls Division midweek finals, played on Tuesday in Sale.
Maffra defeated Stratford in division one, and Sale in division two.
At the beginning of play, the weather was cool, and many spectators arrived to witness two very close encounters.
The division one match had Stratford getting away to a good start. Stratford went out to a five-shot lead after nine ends, this lead extended to 14 after 21 ends.
Things then changed with Maffra coming into the game on the next end and one rink picked up five shots, which appeared to lift the other rinks.
By the 27th end, the Stratford lead was reduced to six shots.
The match turned again, with Maffra winning 16 shots to one in the next four ends, and took the lead. Maffra maintained that efforts, and by the 56th end was out to a 16-shot lead and looking good.
Stratford, though, would not be denied and with nine ends to go there was an 11 shot turnaround to Stratford, with both teams feeling the pressure.
Stratford came again and levelled the scores at the 69th end, going to a two shot lead on the 73rd. Maffra then gained four shots on the next end to again grab the lead and held on in the final end to win the championship 62-59.
The division two match was also a close and exciting encounter all morning, with Sale out to a six-shot lead on the 30th end.
Maffra began to close the gap, and at the 48th end scores were level, before Maffra hit the front on the second last and won the final end to win the pennant 42-38.
