Two accidents on highway

TWO separate accidents on the Princes Highway near Wurruk on Wednesday happened within minutes of each other.

A B-double truck spilled nearly 500 litres of diesel onto the road near the Sale-Heyfield Rd roundabout, after a car pierced its fuel tank following a collision just before noon.

The car was extensively damaged, but there are no reported injuries.

The Country Fire Authority attended the scene, and the Environment Protection Authority was notified.

Those with information regarding the accident are urged to phone Leading Senior Constable Clarke at Sale police station on 5142 2200.

While police were attending, they were notified of a second accident on a roundabout closer to Sale, by a passing motorist.

Police said it appeared the 41-year-old Wurruk man did not turn to negotiate the roundabout, instead driving his motorcycle straight into a roundabout sign.

He suffered numerous injuries and fractures, including a broken collarbone, and witnesses said he was unconscious for some time.

A passing ambulance stopped and paramedics treated the man immediately, before he was taken to Latrobe Regional Hospital.

A police spokesperson said landing on the softer roundabout rather than on the roadway at that speed may have saved the man's life.

Heyfield police are investigating.
