SALE fans have had little to cheer about this Gippsland League football season as the Magpies have struggled for wins despite being competitive.

But the grandstand came alive on Saturday with every final quarter goal greeted with loud cheering as the Magpies stormed home to upset Morwell 15.13 (103) to 10.10 (70).

The result has shaken up the race for fifth place on the ladder.

Morwell, kicking with the breeze to the Macarthur St goal led at the first change, but the Magpies set-up their win with an outstanding second quarter, kicking 7.5 to 2.4 to lead by three goals at half-time.

In an even third term, both teams kicked two goals as the Magpies went into the final change with a 17-point lead.

A quick goal from the Tigers after winning a centre clearance reduced the home side's lead, but was soon restored when Lachie Heywood's long goal was greeted by loud cheering. Sale, sensing a win, kept coming, kicking 5.4 in the final quarter to the Tigers' three goals to win by 33 points.

Sale's Jack Lipman was best afield, with his strong ruckwork. When his teammates went long in his direction, Lipman pulled in strong marks.

Michael Todd and Kane Martin took full advantage of Lipman's ruck work to give the Magpies an edge around the packs.

Jordan Dessent also had plenty of the ball.

Zac Hurley and Ollie Collins were good in defence, while Shane Fyfe and Chris Laverty kept rebounding the back from the back line when the Tigers tried hard to bridge the gap in the final quarter.

Jarrod Freeman and Brad Dessent, back from injury, were good up forward, kicking three goals each. Jordan Dessent and Jack McLinden chipped in with two each.

Michael J. Duncan and Brandon McDonald kicked three goals each for the Tigers, while Tayler Weatherill, Ryan Hearn and Joel Soutar were their best players.

Sale’s Will Jones kicks out of the pack.
