THE need to upgrade the Cameron Sports Complex in Maffra was the topic of discussion when Gippsland East MLA Tim Bull met with representatives of the Maffra Gymnastic Club last week.
Maffra Gymnastic Club head coach Robyn Dowse said there was a waiting list of more than 100 children who wanted to take up gymnastics.
"We've got a great club here, but are certainly pushed for room and expanded facilities would assist us greatly," she said.
Regular user groups of the Cameron Street Sports Complex include Maffra Amateur Basketball Association, Maffra Cricket Club, Maffra Junior Football Club, Maffra Gymnastic Club and Maffra Hockey Club, all which have strong memberships that continue to grow.
Mr Bull said the facility was the hub of community sport, particularly junior sport, in Maffra.
"I have a firm view a lot of the problems we encounter in wider society can be addressed by involvement in sports clubs," he said.
"It puts our kids around good role models and teaches them about winning humbly, losing graciously and thinking about other people.
"Sport, in many ways, is a crash course in life."
Mr Bull said it was disappointing there were waiting lists for children wanting to be involved in community sport.
"We need to respond to that by providing expanded facilities where required," he said.
"I strongly support the upgrade of the Cameron Sports Complex and last parliament sitting week I urged the Minister for Sport, John Eren, to invest in the future of sport in Maffra by partnering with Wellington Shire Council to deliver these improvements," Mr Bull said.
