TWENTY-TWO of the best netballers from across east Gippsland travelled to Werribee at the weekend to participate in the annual Netball Victoria State Titles.
East Gippsland was ably represented in both the under 15 and 17 sections, with a number of Eastern Zone Academy players taking part.
Representation for the region came from as far as Bairnsdale, Sale, Maffra and Yarram.
With various state coaches, Super Netball administrators and Victorian Netball League coaches present, the championships continued to be a good way for talented netballers to be identified. A number of players from previous years have gone on to play in the VNL and state teams.
Two girls from this year’s under 17s team, Alison Dwyer (Lindenow FNC) and Emma Allman (Maffra FNC) have already both been invited to trial for the state team.
Under the guidance of head coaches Staci Scott, Jo Ballinger and Fran Fitzsimon, the East Gippsland teams performed well, with the under 17s having the better of many of their city counterparts, going down to eventual winner Henderson by a goal in the rounds, and finishing 12th out of the 18 regions.
The under 15s had stand-out games against Latrobe Valley and North East. They won more games over the arduous two-day tournament, but narrowly lost to eventual tournament winner Elmer by a goal.
