POLICE have again warned Wellington Shire residents to lock their cars, after 19 from 22 reported thefts in the past month were from unlocked cars.
The thefts include personal property and money, but more significant issues arise when credit cards are taken and used in subsequent offending, made particularly easy with the ‘tap and go’ feature of newer cards.
Sergeant Geoff Howe said criminals are opportunistic, and often tried door handles, continuing until they found an open vehicle.
“Don’t be a victim — check your vehicle is locked, valuables have been removed and, if possible, park in well lit areas,” he said.
Police recommend parking in a locked garage if possible, installing car alarms and recommend tradespeople ensure locking external tool boxes and equipment if they couldn’t be removed.
