Local bragging rights on the line

LOCAL rivalries will be renewed on Saturday night when the Sale Sonics host the Maffra Eagles in the Country Basketball League.

The women’s match will begin at 6pm, with the men from 8pm, at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex.

The Maffra men’s team will then back-up with a match at Churchill on Sunday from 1pm.

THE Sonics were too strong for Bairnsdale during their men’s match on Saturday night.

In making it back-to-back wins, the Sonics defeated the home side 89-68, with Billy Hughes again dominant, scoring 42 points, while Rob Hall contributed 17.

Stephen Savige scored 22 points for the Bullets, who yet to win a match this season.

The Maffra Eagles had a win and a loss from the weekend.

On Saturday night, the Eagles defeated Churchill at home 95-64. Blake Gallatly scored 22 points and Owen Booth 16 for Maffra, while Jordan Canovan posted 30 for the Blue Devils.

On Sunday, the Eagles lost to undefeated ladder leader Warragul 94-76 at Warragul.

IN the women’s, Sale won at Bairnsdale 70-55 on Saturday, with Mel Johnston scoring 18 points and Bree Alexander 13.

Maffra won at Warragul 59-50 on Sunday.
