Contract for Cowwarr upgrade

COWWARR Recreation Reserve will get its long-awaited upgrade, with Wellington Shire Council awarding the contract for the clubrooms redevelopment.

The works will include the demolition of the existing change room and toilet block, construction of a new football and netball change rooms and amenities, female and male umpires changerooms, first aid room, public amenities and social room to cater for both netball and football.

Councillor Gayle Maher said the awarding of the tender was great news for the recreation reserve, as encouragement of sports participation resulted in "healthy individuals" and "proactive communities". The recreation reserve is council-owned, but run by a committee of management.

The main users include Cowwarr Football-Netball Club, Cowwarr Tennis Club and Toongabbie Junior Tennis Club, but the facilities are used by a number of groups on an irregular basis, including local schools and residents.

Every year the Cowwarr Recreation Reserve hosts the Cowwarr Cutters Cup, a mowers racing day, which attracts rare vintage cars and trucks, stationary engines and various memorabilia from all over the district and other parts of Victoria, and attracts a crowd in more than 1000 people.

However, it has long been acknowledged that the amenities are outdated and insufficient, with the home and visiting sides having to share a single shower block and toilets. There is also no provision for netball and female umpires' change and amenities.

In its master pan for the reserve, the council noted that a lack of resources and funding "serve as a weakness and prevent the reserve from replacing aged equipment and deteriorating facilities", and could lead to a loss of members.

The redevelopment tender was awarded to Traralgon company Waltcon.
