THIS week is NAIDOC Week, held nationally every July.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and the week poses an opportunity to participate in a range of activities to support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

This year, NAIDOC Week is themed ‘Because of her, we can’, recognising the significant and active roles Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played — and continue to play — at community, local, state and national levels.

At various NAIDOC Week events across the Wellington Shire, the Gippsland Times has spent some time profiling a handful of influential female leaders in the local indigenous community.
