AFTER defeating Sale on Saturday in a close, skilful game between two extremely evenly-matched teams, Maffra remains on top of the East Gippsland women’s hockey ladder.

At the 10-minute mark, Sale grabbed the lead via Sarah Boag. Maffra’s Jess Cull evened the scores, and then an Ainsley Butcher goal put the home side in front.

In the second half, Sale pressured Maffra for 15 minutes before Boag again scored for the visitors.

Sale continued to pressure, but Kylie Lambert was solid in goal, pulling off a match saving stop. Kahlia Hillbrich scored the winner late in the match to give Maffra a 3-2 win.

IN the open game, ladder leader Sale scored a 4-0 win over Maffra.

Sale’s goals were scored by Mark Benfield, Michael Palmer, Scot Smith and Tom Supplitt.

Maffra continued to pressure throughout the match and were unlucky to have a goal disallowed.

John Higgins provided strong leadership to the young Maffra team.

Elsewhere, Wellington returned from Bairnsdale with a 4-0 victory.

THIS Saturday, Wellington will host Nagle and Maffra will play at Bairnsdale. Sale will have the bye.
