MAFFRA recorded three wins from the opening weekend of the Country Basketball League season.
The Eagles men were victorious twice, while the women were too good for local rival Sale.
At the Cameron Sporting Complex on Saturday night, the Maffra women defeated the Sonics 62-44.
Lillie Schact top-scored for the Eagles with 13, while Emerson Connolly scored 10. For the Sonics, Kristy Glover scored 13 and Breanna Kerton 12.
THE men’s match was a closer affair, with the Eagles winning 94-89.
The Sonics led 28-21 at quarter-time and by seven points late in the second term before Ben Brunt scored two and Sale Whelan a three-pointer to reduce the deficit to four by the main break.
Maffra briefly led during the third quarter, but Sale responded to be ahead 72-70 at three-quarter-time.
The Sonics led by has much as five points during the fourth quarter, but the Eagles wouldn’t die, and reclaimed the lead with a Brendan Little two-pointer with four minutes to play.
A Floyd Fulton scored from beyond the arch to give the Eagles’ a four-point lead. Trips to the foul line stretched the margin to eight points, with a late three-pointer from Billy Hughes cutting the final margin to five.
Hughes led all scorers, with 32, while Sonics teammate Mem Betkas scored 26 before he was fouled out of the match. For the Eagles, Whelan scored 29 and Fulton 22.
IN a Sunday afternoon thriller, the Eagles men won at Churchill 76-74.
The Blue Devils led 68-62 with 4:22 minutes remaining, before the Eagles went on a 10-point scoring run. While the Blue Devils fought back, and had the chance to level the scores in the final second, the Eagles didn’t relinquish the lead.
Whelan continued his strong start to the season for Maffra, scoring 29 points.
THE Eagles will return to the Cameron Sporting Complex on Saturday night to play Warragul, with the women from 6pm and the men 8pm.
Sale will this weekend play at its temporary home court, Bishop Phelan Stadium at the Catholic College Sale St Patrick’s campus.
The Sonics men will play Bairnsdale from 7pm on Saturday night, while the women will host Korumburra on Sunday from 1pm.
On Sunday afternoon, both Maffra teams will play at Traralgon on Sunday afternoon — women from noon, men 2pm.
