V/Line platform, line at Pakenham — Labor

Labor says it will build a line and platform dedicated for V/Line services at Pakenham if re-elected on November 24.

Labor says it will build a line and platform dedicated for V/Line services at Pakenham if re-elected on November 24.

A LINE and platform dedicated for V/Line services will be built at the Pakenham train station under a re-elected Labor state government.

Under the Labor promise, the Pakenham station will become a “super station”, and all four dangerous and congested level crossings in Pakenham will be removed.

Level crossings at McGregor and Racecourse Rds and Main St will be removed, with a new 2.8 kilometre Pakenham Skyrail.

This new elevated rail line will include a new elevated Pakenham super station.

By elevating the rail line, kilometres of new open space will be created, connecting locals from either side of the rail line for the first time.

It will also mean less disruption for residents, businesses and passengers during construction.

Labor claimed Gippslanders could look forward to more frequent and reliable train services and more travel choice under the plan.

A super station at Pakenham will mean a dedicated V/Line track and third platform to separate the regional and metropolitan trains at the new station.

This will deliver a seamless interchange for passengers wanting to connect to the high frequency services which will be serviced by the new, bigger high capacity Metro trains.

The level crossing at Cardinia Rd, Pakenham, will also be removed, with a new road bridge over the rail line the most likely engineering solution.

Nine level crossings have already been removed on the Pakenham line in the last four years, with an additional three crossings — at Dandenong, Hallam, and Berwick — in planning and set for removal by 2022.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said works were underway on the Gippsland Line Upgrade, which will allow for more trains more often.

“Unlike the Victorian Liberals we are delivering real projects that will get people where they need to go,” she said.

Eastern Victoria MLC Harriet Shing said the Labor government was determined to continue the work it began to improve services on the Gippsland line.

“A new super station, along with the removal of these four level crossings in Pakenham, will improve the reliability of our services and provide more travel choices for passengers who are travelling to and from Gippsland,” she said.
