Farmers need some real rate relief

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

DROUGHT-ravaged rural ratepayers are doing it tough, often with huge valuation rises in their land value, which of course result in rate rises.

This is totally unacceptable.

Almost all councils are now charging rural ratepayers residential rates.

There are good reasons there has always been a difference between residential and rural rates, and councils are very aware of them.

Most rural ratepayers have no services, gravel roads, overgrown unmaintained dangerous roadsides, increasingly restrictive ridiculous regulations — the list goes on.

Should rural ratepayers be paying the same as residential?

I don’t think so.

One could only hope councils may one day spend some of this dubious windfall in rural areas where it came from.
