A MAN with extensive experience in the water industry has been appointed Southern Rural Water’s new managing director.

Cameron FitzGerald’s experience includes leadership roles for the past 14 years in urban water organisations, and he is the current general manager for strategy and planning at City West Water.

Southern Rural Water chair Diane James AM said Mr FitzGerald was chosen from a strong field of candidates.

“Cameron stood out as having a vision and focus that closely matches our corporate strategic objectives at SRW,” she said.

Mr FitzGerald’s new area of responsibility as SRW’s managing director covers all rural and groundwater across 88,000 square kilometres (or 37 per cent) of southern Victoria from the South Australian border to the New South Wales border, and from the mountains to the coast.

Among his career achievements, Mr FitzGerald developed a comprehensive long-term water resources strategy for Melbourne in a partnership between urban water businesses, led major commercial transformation projects and has a strong focus customer value and stakeholder engagement.

He lives on the outskirts of Melbourne with his family and will be based at the Ringwood office, with regular visits to Maffra head office and SRW’s other offices.

“Cameron is keen to spend time in each of our regions, getting to know staff and customers across all areas of our business,” Ms James said.

Mr FitzGerald said he was impressed by what SRW was already achieving, and was looking forward to driving new opportunities.

“SRW is an incredibly diverse organisation, and it’s in the middle of an exciting time of development and transformation,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to a really enjoyable and productive 2019 with the SRW team.”

Mr FitzGerald will begin the job in February.

SRW general manager for technical and environmental services, Nicole Griffin, is acting managing director in the interim.
