Local derbies continue

THE third round of Gippsland League football will finish this weekend.

A Latrobe Valley derby will be played on Saturday night at Traralgon, with Moe looking to continue its unbeaten start to the season, while continuing Traralgon's run of losses.

The Lions have had big back-to-back wins over teams, albeit those which missed the finals last year. They will face a Traralgon side eager to kickstart its season after being seen as a contender to make the finals.

Already two wins behind fifth-placed Sale, which has played one more match, the Maroons risk losing touch with the top five if they lose at home on Saturday.

MORWELL will head east to play Bairnsdale on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers will move into the top five, at Sale's expense, with a victory.

After losing to Moe in round one, the Tigers would have been buoyed by their 69-point victory over Wonthaggi. The Tigers will be playing their first game away from home, and will need to be strong throughout the four quarters.

Bairnsdale was unlucky not to have won either of its matches. The Redlegs were in a good position to defeat Sale in round one, and couldn't make the most of their chances against Maffra.

Saturday presents a good opportunity for the Redlegs to open their account.

COMPLETING the round of local derbies, Warragul will host Drouin on Sunday.

Both sides will be looking to rebound after disappointing performances before Easter.

Following an opening round victory over Traralgon, the Hawks came back to earth after losing to Moe by 92 points, while the Gulls have lost both their opening matches.
