TWO Sale Sonics teams competed at the Melbourne Junior Basketball Tournament at the weekend, returning home with a second and third placing.

The Sonics' under 12 girls' team played off against Moe in the B grade grand final, but went down 28-18.

The Sonics' under 10 boys finished third in A grade, losing their semi-final - also to Moe.

Girls coach Greg Carmody said the team put up a good effort in the grand final.

"Things we were working on, like our man-to-man defence, were things we could see improving with every game," he said.

"We played well all weekend, and the girls have enjoyed the opportunity to take on some Melbourne teams and further improve their basketball."

Nikki Sandeman was named most valuable player in the grand final.

Boys' coach Jo Crawford-Wynd was equally pleased with her team's effort.

"We've been working on our full court passing game and the boys were able to execute those new skills really well throughout the weekend," she said.

"I was so proud to see their improvement.

"We lost our semi to Moe, and Moe went on to win the grand final, so we were right up there with the rest of the group."

There's one more tournament left for the current representative season, to be held in Morwell on July 27 and 28.

The Sonics are currently advertising for next seasons rep coaches.
