SALE-MAFFRA recovered from a poor start to open its Melbourne Country Week cricket campaign with a victory on Monday.
The Sharks defeated West Gippsland at Frankston.
Sent in to bat, the Sharks were in early trouble, falling to 4-24.
Captain Jack Rietschel and Taylor Tatterson led the recovery, putting on 71 for the fifth wicket. Daniel Lever dismissed both, disrupting Rietschel's timber for 29 and Tatterson for 60 with a catch off his own bowling.
Isaac Love contributed 14, Dylan Bolton 12 and Tom Morrison 11 not out to give the Sharks something decent to defend, with side bowled out for 164 in its 47th over.
West Gippsland fell 18 runs short.
A run-out by Dylan Rowley triggered a collapse for West Gippsland, which lost lost 3-5.
The side was 4-43 when Jack Wrigglesworth effected another run-out.
Opener Kiefer Peries was the key through the innings. He and Jess Mathers (32) added 59 for the seventh wicket, until Rietschel claimed his second wicket in the 37th over.
Peries took the initiative to push West Gippsland towards the target, but Wrigglesworth claimed two wickets before Peries became the final wicket to fall, for 54, caught off Brad Scott's bowling.
Scott finished with 2-12, Wrigglesworth 2-19, while Rietschel claimed 3-44.
The Sharks will play Ballarat today at Yarrambat.
