Plans for a community-based rapid HIV testing trial in Victoria have been announced by Health Minister David Davis.
Mr Davis said the trial, in partnership with the Burnet Institute and the Victorian AIDS Council, would begin in the next few months.
He said AIDS test results could be available in 20 minutes or less instead of weeks.
Mr Davis said he would be seeking a commitment from the Federal Health Minister to ensure rapid HIV testing was included on the Medical Benefits Scheme.
“There are about 6080 Victorians living with HIV and approximately 265 new cases identified each year.
“Effective treatment as prevention relies on early detection of HIV infection.
“If a person knows their HIV positive status sooner they can potentially start on HIV treatments sooner and stay healthy,” he said.
