Flood focus on the east

Updated 11.50am 19/6/13:

A MODERATE flood warning remains in place for the Mitchell River.

Minor warnings are still in place for the Gippsland Lakes, Thomson and Latrobe rivers, while a final minor flood warning has been issued for the Avon River.

Mitchell River

IN the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, general rainfall totals of around 20 to 30mm were recorded with an isolated 72mm recorded at Dargo. Isolated rainfall totals of 10 to 15mm have been forecast for the remainder of Wednesday.

Minor to moderate flooding is occurring in the lower reaches of the Mitchell River catchment.

The Mitchell River at Glenaladale peaked around 3.4 m (minor flood level 3m) overnight. The river is expected to fall below the minor flood level Wednesday morning. Forecast rainfall is not expected to cause renewed stream rises at this location.

The Mitchell River at Rosehill peaked early Wednesday morning around 7.7m overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Indications are that the Mitchell River at Bairnsdale Pumphouse is peaking around the moderate flood level (5.5m). Areas of minor to moderate flooding are expected to persist around and downstream of Bairnsdale into Thursday. Forecast rainfall is not expected to influence stream levels at this location.

Gippsland Lakes

AS a result of heavy rain in the Gippsland catchments over the last week, elevated lake levels are currently being observed. With forecast rainfall during Wednesday, further rises in lake levels are possible.

Lake levels at Hollands Landing are currently around 0.6-0.7m. Further rises are possible over the next few days with a peak around 0.7-0.8m during Thursday.

Lake levels at Loch Sport are expected to remain around 0.6-0.7m.

Lake levels at Paynesville are currently around 0.5m. Further rises are possible over the next few days with a peak around 0.7-0.8m during Thursday.

Lake levels at Metung are expected to remain around 0.6-0.7m.

Lake levels at Lakes Entrance are expected to remain around 0.6-0.7m with high tides.

Thomson River

IN the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday rainfall totals of up to 10 mm were recorded in the Thomson River catchment. No significant rainfall is expected for the remainder of Wednesday.

The Thomson River at upstream of Cowwarr Weir peaked at the minor flood level (3.6m) early Wednesday. The river at this location is falling. No further stream rises are expected.

The Thomson River at Wandocka is currently steady around the minor flood level (6.2m). Areas of minor flooding are expected to continue around and downstream of this location during Wednesday.

Renewed rises are occurring at the Thomson River at Sale Wharf. Water levels at this location may peak around the minor flood level (2.4m) overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Latrobe River

IN the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday rainfall totals of up to 6mm have been recorded in the Latrobe River catchment. No significant rainfall is forecast for the Latrobe River catchment for the remainder of Wednesday.

Renewed areas of minor flooding are occurring in the Latrobe River catchment around Rosedale.

Renewed stream rises are occurring which has resulted in the redevelopment of minor flooding around and downstream of Rosedale. Stream levels around the minor flood level (4m) are expected to persist at this location for the remainder of Wednesday.

Avon River

RAINFALL totals of up to 30mm have been recorded in the Avon River catchment in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday. Isolated rainfall totals up to 10 mm have been forecast for the remainder of Wednesday but are not expected to cause renewed stream rises.

Stream levels have peaked and are now receding throughout the Avon River catchment.
