Minor flood warning for the Mitchell River

A MINOR flood warning is in place for the Mitchell River.

In the 24 hours to 9am Thursday rainfall totals of up to 85mm have been recorded in the Mitchell River catchment. Rainfall totals of 50 to 75mm have been forecast for Thursday into Friday.

Stream rises are being observed in response to overnight rainfall, which is expected to lead to minor flooding developing during Thursday. With the forecast rainfall more severe flooding may develop overnight Thursday into Friday.

The Wonnangatta River at Waterford is currently below the minor flood level (3.5 metres) and rising. The river is expected to reach the minor flood level Thursday into Friday.

More severe flooding may develop due to forecast rainfall.

The Mitchell River at Glenaladale is currently below the minor flood level (3m) and rising. The river is expected to reach the minor flood level late Thursday into Friday. More severe flooding may develop due to forecast rainfall.

Early indications are that areas of flooding may develop in the Rosehill/Bairnsdale area during Friday based on the rainfall forecast for Thursday and Friday.

A more detailed forecast will be provided once upstream gauges have peaked.
