Alpine grazing bid defeated in parliament

A MOTION to allow mountain cattlemen to resume grazing in the High Country has been defeated in Federal Parliament by one vote this week.

If passed, the motion, introduced into parliament by Gippsland MHR Darren Chester, would have overturned the Federal Government’s ban on alpine grazing.

The ban was in response to the State Government allowing around 400 cattle to the Alpine National Park last year as part of a bushfire mitigation trial.

The motion was defeated 71 votes to 70.
