Police investigating fires

POLICE are seeking witnesses to the theft and destruction of a car in Sale early on Thursday morning, and suspect the vehicle may have been involved in the theft of almost $4000 in alcohol from Stratford’s Avon Hotel.

The burnt-out remains of a dark green Hyundai Excel were discovered in Dawson St behind Sale Greyhound Club early on Thursday.

Police believe the stolen car may have been used by burglars who broke into the hotel.

The hotel was broken into about 4.45am on Thursday, offenders stealing alcohol valued at about $3700.

They also shattered several windows, the damage bill estimated to be about $500.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding the car theft or burglary to phone Wellington Crime Investigation Unit on 5143 5000.

INVESTIGATORS are treating a fire that burnt out a car in Sale late on Sunday night as suspicious.

Neighbours noticed smoke and flames in the carport of the Fitzroy St home about 10pm and phoned 000.

CFA crews from Sale and Maffra arrived a few minutes later to discover a Ford F350 utility was alight in the carport.

The home was empty at the time of the fire, with the residents out of town for the night.

CFA crews extinguished the fire within five minutes, containing damage to the carport and preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the residence.

Police have since become involved, and a CFA fire investigator has inspected the scene.
