SIGNIFICANT traffic delays, and an overnight closure period, will occur along the South Gippsland Highway between Sale and Longford in coming weeks as part of the Cox’s Bridge flood protection project.
From Monday until Wednesday, May 16 more frequent delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected between 7am to 5pm.
Similar delays will occur between Tuesday, May 22 and Wednesday, May 30 as heavy cranes lift bridge spans into place.
The delays to traffic will be needed to allow the 200 tonne crawler crane to safely operate while lifting bridge beams into place next to the road.
VicRoads will also need to close the highway for a 10 to 12 hour period in late May.
To minimise the impact on traffic this closure will be carried out at night, with traffic detoured through Rosedale.
When the date and time of the closure have been confirmed the community will be advised in advance.
The timing of all of the works and road closure is subject to weather conditions with the cranes unlikely to operate during thick fog or high winds.
VicRoads has urged all road users to plan trips ahead of time and factor in these delays.
There will be more on the works in Tuesday’s Gippsland Times.
