A 24-YEAR-old Heyfield man and a 38-year-old Maffra man will face armed robbery and aggravated burglary charges following a cowardly attack on a 76-year-old man in his Maffra home on Monday morning.
Police allege the younger man gained entry to the house under false pretences between 7am and 8am on Monday morning before threatening the elderly man with an iron bar, striking him on the torso and threatening him with a knife.
They allege the younger offender stole cash and cheques while the older man remained outside the house before the duo fled.
Police allege the younger man then attempted to cash cheques at a local bank branch the same day, but left the bank when he became nervous that the transaction was taking too long.
He was apprehended 15 minutes later in Sale.
The 38-year-old was arrested on Wednesday morning.
Both men, who are known to police, have been charged with armed robbery and aggravated burglary and have been remanded to appear in Bairnsdale Magistrates Court on July 18.
Det-Sgt Andrew Mehlert from Wellington Crime Investigation Unit said the elderly man received medical treatment after the incident and was lucky to escape serious injury.
