MOTORISTS endured lengthy delays along the South Gippsland Highway between Sale and Longford on Wednesday.
At its peak, motorists had to wait more than an hour, with bridge building works as part of the Cox’s Bridge Flood Protection Project taking much longer than the contractor had originally anticipated.
On Wednesday afternoon VicRoads asked the contractor to stop the work.
The halt has been called until an improved way of lifting the bridge beams into place can be found which will reduce the impact on traffic.
Some minor delays were still experienced between 5am to 6am Thursday morning while large trucks carted the concrete bridge beams to nearby the site.
VicRoads changed the movement of these large truckloads so delays were only around five to 10 minutes.
After the beams were delivered traffic returned to normal flows.
VicRoads said once an improved strategy for these works had been agreed with the contractor, it would advise the community when the works would resume on site and an estimation of any associated delays.
