POLICE are urging people in Gippsland to check their firearms licence is up to date.
Leading Senior Constable Stuart Jones from Bairnsdale police said it was important that holders regularly checked the expiry date on their license.
“A firearms owner who is unlicensed risks prosecution and significant penalties,” he said.
“An unlicensed firearms owner must dispose of their firearms at a police station for destruction or a licensed firearms dealer for storage immediately.
“No other method is acceptable – for example, they cannot leave them with a licensed friend so if they don’t comply they will lose what might be expensive equipment.
“It is important that firearms owners don’t become complacent in relation to licensing.”
Firearms owners should contact police if they have any questions or concerns about an expired licence or firearms ownership.
