AN intellectually challenged Maffra man who stole a milk tanker and drove it to Melbourne has been sentenced to a year in a youth detention centre.
Maurice Collie, 20, stole a tanker containing 22,000 litres of milk from a Fulton Rd, Maffra, truck yard on August 11.
The unlicensed driver picked up a hitchhiker before leading police on a 150 kilometre chase on the Princes Highway.
The pursuit continued for just under two hours before the truck stalled on the Police Rd off ramp at Noble Park.
Collie pleaded guilty to theft, reckless conduct and traffic offences.
Collie’s lawyer told the Bairnsdale Magistrates Court on Wednesday her client had the intellectual capacity of a 12 or 13-year-old.
Collie’s father said his son needed treatment for bowel cancer and had accepted responsibility for his actions.
