WORKSAFE paid a visit to the Esso Longford gas plant last week checking the site for damage after a crude oil and water spill last month.
The leak which occurred Wednesday, October 31 was believed to have been the result of corrosion from a disused crude oil pipe at the plant.
There were no injuries to personnel and the incident was contained within an hour.
WorkSafe has issued Esso two improvement notices requesting that it assess disused pipes around the site and remove any remaining products to avoid similar incidents from occurring.
An Esso spokesperson said a thorough internal investigation was being conducted into the oil release to determine the causes, and to ensure everything was being done to prevent such spills from happening again.
“We are disappointed that this incident has occurred and that we have received two improvement notices from WorkSafe Victoria,” the spokesperson said.
“Such incidents do not reflect our objectives, or the intent and effort we put into managing our operations in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
“We continue to make significant investments in integrity and maintenance programs to ensure that our facilities operate reliably and safely at all times.”
