Burning off successful

THE Aberfeldy-Donnelly fire continues to be controlled.

The fire is continuing in the area from Donnelly Creek south of Aberfeldy to areas north and north-west of Heyfield.

Department of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria crews have done some successful burning out work in the Cheynes Bridge and Licola Rd areas north of Glenmaggie over the weekend.

Burning out operations Monday will be in Glenmaggie Flora and Fauna Reserve, north of Old Joe’s Rd; Geoghegans Rd near Kellys Lane, north of Coogulla; 20 Acre Creek, east of the Heyfield-Licola Rd, and Cheynes Bridge Track, west of the Heyfield-Licola Rd.

Road users in these areas should slow down, watch out for firefighting vehicles and turn on their headlights in smoky conditions.

Smoke will be visible from nearby communities and roads and further afield.

Crews are also checking for hot spots, patrolling and blacking out in other areas of the fire and assessing and dealing with hazardous trees so priority tracks can be opened as soon as possible.

THE fire in the Hotham Heights, Dinner Plain and Harrietville area is yet to be contained.

Backburning is planned this afternoon along the Great Alpine Rd near the Razorback, resulting in smoke being visible in nearby communities and roads.

The Great Alpine Rd is closed between Harrietville and Dinner Plain and the Dargo High Plains Rd is closed between the Great Alpine Rd and Dargo.

The Alpine National Park remains closed around Harrietville.
