Witnesses sought for Bairnsdale assault

BAIRNSDALE sexual offences and child abuse investigation detectives are appealing for witnesses following a sexual assault at Picnic Point, Bairnsdale in December last year.

The victim, a 65-year-old Bairnsdale woman, told police she walking along Bredt St towards the Mitchell River walking track near Picnic Point on Saturday, December 29 at 2pm when she was passed a young boy, perceived to be of African appearance, who said hello to her.

The woman walked to the river, which was about 800 metres away, where the boy approached her and struck up a conversation with her.

The woman became concerned about the boy’s behaviour and waved to two men who were on a boat, travelling along the river.

The two men returned the woman’s wave but continued on their way.

The boy ran ahead of the woman and hid in some bushes.

As the woman approached the boy’s hiding spot, he came out of the bushes and sat on a seat.

As the woman walked past he approached her and indecently assaulted her.

The boy is described as being in his early teens with a thin build and dark coloured skin.
