ABOUT half a hectare of grassland and trees were burnt on Friday after a burn-off on private property flared out of control in strong winds.
Yarram police said the burn-off on Albert River Rd at Jack River had been lit a couple of days previously and appeared to have continued burning underground before the flare-up.
Police and several fire units were called about 3.40pm Friday and the fire was brought under control about 7pm.
The road was closed for some time as police directed traffic around the scene, and several CFA fire units attended.
Police said there had been the potential for the fire to spread to bushland, and are warning property owners of the dangers of flare-ups while burning off.
