SEVEN prison guards have been taken to hospital after a brawl broke out at Fulham Correctional Centre Wednesday morning.
One officer aged in his 40s received extensive injuries to his face, head, chest and back and was taken by ambulance to Central Gippsland Health Service, where he is in a serious but stable condition.
The incident occurred about 10.30am after two inmates, who are brothers, were told they would not be granted bereavement leave to attend a relative’s funeral. Up to eight other inmates joined the brawl, which lasted about 20 minutes.
Other security officers were taken to hospital in private vehicles.
No inmates were injured during the violent clash, which resulted in the prison going into lockdown for the rest of the day.
