Minor injuries after fiery crash

A 49-YEAR-old Queensland man is recovering in Central Gippsland Health Service, Sale, with minor injuries after a fiery crash at Giffard West Thursday morning.

The man was travelling south along Giffard Rd at about 90 to 100km/ph when his car ran off the road and collided head on with a tree.

A fire, originating in the engine, quickly engulfed the car.

Police were called to the priority incident at 7.40am, by which time the driver had managed to pull himself from the car and was sitting on the side of the road when passers-by stopped to render aid.

The man was assisted into the back of an ambulance as police arrived, and taken to CGHS with non-life threatening injuries. Police suspect an injured right ankle.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the incident.

As there are no skid marks on the road indicating an attempt to stop, police believe the crash may be a result of driver fatigue.

The car is a write-off.
