Minor flood warning for Thomson River

A MINOR flood warning has been issued for the Thomson River.

In the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday rainfall totals of up to 46mm have been recorded in the Thomson River catchment. Since 9am rainfall totals of up to 12mm have been recorded.

Rainfall totals of 50mm to 70mm have been forecast for the remainder of Tuesday into Wednesday.

Minor flooding is expected to develop in the Thomson River during Tuesday afternoon.

The Thomson River at Cooper Creek is below the minor flood level (2.3m) and rising. With forecast rainfall the river may reach the minor flood level overnight Tuesday.

The Thomson River upstream of Cowwarr Weir is below the minor flood level (3.65m) and rising. The river is expected to exceed the minor flood level in the next few hours and with forecast rainfall further rises are possible.

The Thomson River at Wandocka is steady below the minor flood level (6.2m). Significant stream rises are expected from late Tuesday. A forecast peak will be provided once upstream gauges have peaked.

Flood watch issued

This morning, a flood watch was issued for West and South Gippsland.

A low pressure system near the central New South Wales coast will drift southwards on Tuesday passing the eastern tip of Victoria around midday before moving towards Flinders Island at night. The low will remain near northern Tasmania on Wednesday before moving quickly away to the southeast on Thursday as a high pressure system develops south of Western Australia.

In the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday rainfall totals of up to 76mm have been recorded in the West Gippsland catchments with totals less than 10 mm recorded in the South Gippsland catchments.

Areas of rain have been forecast for the West and South Gippsland catchments from Tuesday afternoon to late Wednesday morning. Rainfall totals of 50 to 70 mm are likely with higher isolated totals possible.

Some stream rises have been in observed in the West and South Gippsland catchments in response to the recent rainfall. With the forecast rainfall further stream rises are expected and areas of minor flooding may develop from late Tuesday.

At this stage, no flooding is expected to develop in the Gippsland Lakes.

The Bureau of Meteorology will continue to monitor the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if and when required.
