Kayakers rescued from Avon River

THREE people from Maffra were rescued after their kayaks overturned in the Avon River on Tuesday night.

The trio was paddling in seemingly calm waters near Weirs Crossing about 7pm when they reached a tight section where the current overcame them, pushing them deep into overhanging willow branches and causing the kayaks to overturn.

The trio was unable to get out and phoned 000.

Police from Briagolong and Maffra attended along with SES and CFA.

All three were removed from the water about 8.15pm.

A 55-year-old female, 54-year-old male and 44-year-old female were treated at the scene by ambulance and, despite being cold, were given a clean bill of health.
