Minister approves industry zones for shire towns

FUTURE industrial growth in Yarram, Maffra and Stratford has been supported by the Minister for Planning.

The minister has approved Amendment C74 to the Wellington Planning Scheme, which came into operation on Thursday, April 10.

As part of the amendment, selected lots on Fulton Rd, Maffra and the corner of Church and Livingston Sts, Yarram will be rezoned for future industrial growth.

The amendment includes the 2011 Industrial Land Strategy into the Wellington Planning Scheme as a reference document.

It adds the recommendations of the Industrial Land Strategy, including designated areas for long term industrial growth, to the local planning policy framework.

Wellington Shire mayor Scott Rossetti said the amendment came about after a 2007 state government audit identified Yarram, Maffra and Stratford did not have enough land available for industrial development.

“Council voted to adopt the implementation of the Yarram, Maffra and Stratford Industrial Land Strategy in its ordinary meeting on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, providing residents and businesses with a clear guide of future industrial development aspirations in the three towns,” he said.

“This positive outcome will enhance the ability of Yarram, Maffra and Stratford to attract new businesses and meet industrial growth demand in future as Gippsland’s population grows.”
