Serial arsonist sentenced

A SERIAL arsonist has been sentenced to three years and nine months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 16 months after pleading guilty to lighting five fires in the Coongulla area between 2006 and 2012.

James Frederick Saxe, 77, a former Victoria Police officer and former Coongulla Fire Brigade member, pleaded guilty in Sale County Court on Wednesday to four charges of intentionally causing a bushfire and one charge of recklessly causing a bushfire.

The fires were lit in various locations around Coongulla and Maffra West Upper.

Despite the pleas, the former Coongulla resident still denies having lit the fires.
