Yarram’s 10-hour siege

A DRAMATIC 10-hour siege in Yarram on Monday night culminated in a 40-year-old man being tasered before being taken to Latrobe Regional Hospital under police guard.

Police were called to a Maxwell Court home about 3.30am after reports a man was behaving erratically.

When they arrived, the agitated man had barricaded himself in the house.

Negotiations began, and three critical incident response teams from Melbourne, three canine units and police from Sale, Traralgon and Yarram became involved in the stand-off.

Senior-Sergeant Geoff Straughen said after 10 hours of negotiations, the agitated man came out of the house carrying an edged implement.

He said police orders to drop the weapon and lay on the ground were not complied with, and a bean bag round was deployed with little effect.

The man was then tasered before being taken to hospital.

Sen-Sgt Straughen praised the efforts of those involved in what was a difficult situation.

Police yesterday had no information regarding the man’s condition.
