Swimmers fly at championships

WILL Spencer won three goal medals when the Gippsland Swimming Championships were held in Sale last weekend.

Will won the boys’ eight and under 50 metres freestyle, backstroke and butterfly events.

Emily Morrison won two gold medals, setting a new Gippsland record in taking out the girls’ 12 and under 200m freestyle. She also won the 11 to 12 years 100m backstroke.

Emily also bettered the previous record in coming second in the 11 to 12 100m butterfly with fellow Sale swimmer Jo Rowand finishing third.

Jo shared bronze with Traralgon’s Chloe Trickett in the girls’ 11-12 100m freestyle.

Emily and Jo combined with Chloe Haylock and Megan Keil to win the silver medal in the girls’ 12 and under 4x50m freestyle relay.

Eliza Jeffs had a successful championships, winning two gold and silver and bronze medals. She won the girls’ nine to 10 50m freestyle, silver in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m butterfly.

In the same age group, Hayley Castle came second in the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, and third in the 50m freestyle.

Eliza and Hayley were joined by Hollie Rowand and Sara Morrison to win the girls’ 10 and under 4x50m medley relay.

Jake Hutchins won silver medals in the boys’ nine to 10 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and the 12 and under 4x50m freestyle relay alongside Liam Wilson, Mitchell Whykes and Fergus Hamilton.

Fergus came third in the 11 to 12 100m freestyle.

Hannah Shepherd came second in the girls’ eight and under 50m freestyle and butterfly.

Traralgon dominated the meeting, receiving almost four times as many competition points as second-placed Warragul. Sale finished third.
