THE 2012 East Gippsland Hockey Association season began on Saturday when the the junior round robin was held at Nagle College, Bairnsdale.
Conditions were ideal for hockey with grounds in good condition and a mild, sunny day with light winds.
There were 48 games played in total over three divisions, under 13, under 15 and under 18s. Because of the good conditions matches were generally high scoring and there were only four draws for the day.
The closest competition was in the under 13 division with ladder positions decided on goal difference.
Nagle signalled it will once again be the club to beat with its teams finishing on top in all divisions.
The day also provided selectors with the opportunity to pick teams for the representative sides participating in Melbourne in the Victorian Country Championships late May.
Teams were announced at the end of the day.
THE home and away season begins on Saturday with Sale hosting Nagle in the open division, while Maffra will travel to Bairnsdale.
Wellington will not field an open team this season.
Sale will field two women’s sides, with the Cygnets at home to Nagle, while the Swans will take on Wellington.
Wellington has the bye in all other grades.
Hockey will take a break on May 26 and June 9 for junior and senior country week respectively, and during the mid-year school holidays on June 30 and July 7.
