SALE continued its run of wins over last year’s Gippsland League netball finalists.
In round one the Magpies defeated Bairnsdale and followed up with a win over premier Drouin before doing down to Wonthaggi. On Saturday the Magpies bounded back with a win over Traralgon in a high standard clash.
At quarter-time the Maroons led 10-8 before Sale fought back with a 12-8 second quarter to lead at half-time.
After a goal-for-goal third term, the Magpies 27-26 with the stage set for a great finish. Scores were level during the final term before the Magpies won 39-32 with a 12-6 quarter with goal shooter Georgia Andrews scoring seven goals and goal attack Lara Dunkley five.
In defence Mel Johnston and Clare Billings combined to force turnovers with Johnston tapping balls from rebounds to Billings, who launched attacks by hitting teammates.
Elyse Murray was good in defence, while Lexie Joyce played well at wing defence.
Sarah Jolly and Kasey McKay quickly fed the ball to Dunkley and Andrews.
It was the first time Sale had defeated Traralgon in A grade netball and senior football on the same day.
Traralgon won the B and C grade games.
Sale came from seven goals down at half-time to win the under 17 match 31-27, the Maroons won the under 15s and 13s.
MAFFRA rebounded from its round four loss to ladder leader Leongatha with a 38-29 win at Bairnsdale.
The Eagles remain in second place on the ladder, one win ahead of Sale, who is third.
With Moe not fielding an A grade side this season, the Eagles will have two weekends off with the league taking a break for the VCFL championships.
The Eagles’ only other win on the day came in the under 15s, who remain undefeated this season.
