Sale sends a message in men’s hockey

KEEN to cement its place in the East Gippsland men’s hockey top four, Sale sent a message to the other flag contenders with a convincing 7-1 at Maffra.

Mark Benfield scored two goals for Sale with Sarah Boag, Ryan Maynard, Adam Slattery, Tim Dunn and Jason Slattery also finding the back of the net. Mark Humphris scored Maffra’s goal.

Orbost defeated Bairnsdale 5-3 after fast and skilful game. Orbost’s goals came from Brendan Coulton (three) and Mike Irvine (two), Scott Gillett scored all three of Bairnsdale’s goals.

Peter Stevens scored the winning goal as Swan Reach defeated Nagle 1-0.

IN the women’s, a much stronger Sale Cygnets side recorded an emphatic victory over Wellington with goals from Emily Carrolan, Makayla Colley, Julieanne Nicholls, Sarah Boag and Linda Verhoeven.

Nagle and Swan Reach drew 3-3. Mikayla Blackshaw, Isobelle McArthur and Paula O’Neill scored for Nagle, while Swan Reach’s goals came from Rebecca Corben, Sarah Grixti and Shana Snell.

The Sale Swans were forced to forfeit to the Maffra.

THIS Saturday, Wellington will host Maffra at Lions Park in Sale, where Swan Reach will play Maffra in the men’s, Sale is at home to Bairnsdale, Orbost travels to Nagle, while the Sale Swans will play Swan Reach in the other women’s game.
