SALE Cygnets caused the upset of the round in East Gippsland women’s hockey, defeating premiership favourite Maffra 5-2 at Maffra.
The Cygnets showed they are a side to watch for the finals, which begin in two weeks. They have been steadily improving over the past few seasons and this season have showed signs of becoming a powerhouse of the competition.
Emily Carrolan scored two goals for the Cygnets with one each from Belinda Coulton, Gemma Tattersall and Julieanne Nichols. Maffra’s goals were scored by Sharon Mogridge and Marion Vince.
Swan Reach was too strong for Wellington. Goals were scored by Jessica Adams, Rebecca Corben, Sarah Grixti, Stephanie Nichols, Shana Snell, Susan Spiller and Katie Tong.
Nagle comfortably defeated a rebuilding Bairnsdale side with goals from Mikayla Blackshaw, Paula O’Neill, Fiona Morrison and Nadine Philip.
SALE was too strong for Maffra in the men’s, winning 5-0. Adam Slattery scored a hat-trick and Mark Benfield two goals.
In a game between teams keen for victory in the lead-up to the finals, Nagle defeated Bairnsdale 3-0 with goals from Shane Bartlett, Casey Mitchell and Fraser Philip.
Orbost won a close tussle against Swan Reach 2-1 to continued its good form. Goals for Orbost were scored by Brendan Coulton and Stuart Washington, while Simon Murrell found the net for Swan Reach.
IN the last round before the finals, Swan Reach will tomorrow host Bairnsdale, Wellington will host Nagle and Maffra will travel to Orbost. Sale has the bye in all grades except the under 18s and men, who will host Nagle at home.
