Powerful Parrots

LEONGATHA showed why it’s the Gippsland League A grade netball minor premier by defeating Sale 79-28.

The Parrots were too big and strong for the young Magpies team, firing passes all over the indoor court at Leongatha. Their shooters rarely missed with goal shooter Meg Rosser hard to counter during an impressive display.

Sale finished fifth on the ladder and will meet Wonthaggi in Sunday’s elimination final at Traralgon.

Magpies coach Di Jolly said the team was a year ahead of plan. When Mel Johnston returned at the start of the season, they began to rebuild the side with a view to being competitive this season and playing finals in 2013.

With five under 18 players in their squad and with the support of experienced players, the Magpies were able to hold a spot in the top five.

Maffra finished its A grade season in eighth place after a 27-25 loss at home to Traralgon, who is heading into the finals.

In B grade, Maffra will meet Morwell in the elimination final.

In the under 18s, Sale and Maffra, who have played high standard matches this season, will meet in the qualifying final at Morwell on Saturday.

Sale’s under 15 team will play Wonthaggi in the qualifying final with Maffra to play Drouin in the elimination final.

In the under 13s, Sale will play Wonthaggi in the qualifying final and Maffra will meet Bairnsdale in the elimination final.
