Hockey heartbreak for Sale

A GOAL in extra time ended Sale’s season in the East Gippsland men’s hockey preliminary final at Orbost last Saturday.

In a very close game against Orbost, neither team was unable to score until the 62nd minute when Brendan Coulton scored for Orbost. A minute later, a long run from Sale’s Mark Benfield resulted in a levelling goal.

Early in extra time, Coulton again found the net to give Orbost the victory.

Orbost will now meet Nagle in the grand final this Saturday at the Cameron Sports Complex in Maffra from 2.30pm.

IN the women’s grand final from 1pm, Maffra will meet Swan Reach, who defeated the Sale Cygnets 2-1 last weekend.

This was yet another game that went to the wire. With scores tied up at 1-1 and about five minutes to play, Swan Reach scored the winning goal.

Swan Reach’s goals were scored by Beck Corben and Jude Lunny, while Belinda Coulton scored for the Cygnets.

THE under 18s was the closest preliminary final. Bairnsdale and Swan Reach were level at 2-2 at full-time with neither side able to penetrate the opposition’s defence during golden goal extra time.

The game went to penalty strokes, which was won by Bairnsdale. Edward Long scored both Bairnsdale’s goals, while Jack Bowden and Kobi Laudani scored for Swan Reach.

Bairnsdale will play Nagle in the grand final from 11.40am.

BAIRNSDALE defeated Swan Reach 4-1 in the under 15s, setting up a grand final against Nagle from 10.20am this Saturday.

Riley Simpson scored three goals and Shae Chalker for one with Swan Reach’s goal scored by Jack Bowden.

A MAX Bowden goal gave Swan Reach a 1-0 win over Bairnsdale, booking it a place in the under 15 grand final against Nagle, which begins at 9am.
