THE 150th Bairnsdale Cup will be held this Sunday.
As part of the celebrations the 2012 Melbourne Cup Tour will be in Bairnsdale on Saturday and Sunday with cup winning jockeys, Jim Johnson and Roy Higgins, as its tour ambassadors who will share the allure of the golden trophy with the community.
The Victoria Racing Club will work with an organising committee led by the Bairnsdale Racing Club in the lead up to the tour’s arrival to engage the wider community in a full weekend of events.
Alanna Pomeroy from the Bairnsdale Racing Club was excited Johnson and Higgins would feature as Melbourne Cup Tour ambassadors at events in Bairnsdale, providing the community with their personal insights into the “race that stops a nation”.
“We are thrilled to be selected as a Melbourne Cup Tour destination and we look forward to hearing Roy and Jim’s stories of winning racing’s greatest prize,” she said.
While in Bairnsdale, the 18-carat gold Melbourne Cup, valued at $175,000, will visit Bairnsdale Rotunda, Maddocks Gardens Nursing Home and enjoy a charity cocktail party at Bairnsdale Racecourse to celebrate 150 years of racing.
On Sunday, the tour party will explore Gippsland Lakes. The tour will then make its way trackside to the 150th Bairnsdale Cup, attending the ladies’ lunch before placing the cup on display in the afternoon for all to admire.
