Mixed results for Maffra

THE Maffra Eagles recorded a win and a loss from its double header weekend in the Country Basketball League.

The Eagles lost to the leader-leading Western Port Steelers 62-61 on Saturday night at Somerville.

The deciding factor was missed foul shots. Maffra needs to improve its shooting percentage in this area to get over the line in these tight games.

Jazmin Allman had a great game, finishing with 16 points, while Kate Bond once again figured in the top scorers, with 14.

On Sunday the Eagles hosted the Korumburra Wildcats, who had always been tough opponents.

With the Eagles needing to bring their best game to ensure a win, it proved difficult without key players as the Wildcats had the better of the match for three quarters. However, another steady come back in the final quarter gave the home side a tense four-point win, 67-63.

Alex Gallatly made a lay-up and foul shots to grab the win in the dying seconds, contributing to her 14 points for the game.

Ella Bertachinni top-scored with 16 points, and, after taking a heavy knock to the face, Bond made a gutsy return to the court to finish with 12.

The Eagles have this weekend off, which will prove to be a handy rest ahead of their home game against Traralgon on Saturday, November 10 from 7pm.
